WHY DOES MY NUT BUTTER CUP HAVE DRY OR POWDERY FILLING?

JUSTIN’S® Certified Organic nut butter cups are extra special due to being free of preservatives or hydrogenated oils. This cleaner ingredient label makes them more sensitive to confectionery quality concerns. For this, we recommend that our nut butter cups are stored below 65° F and kept away from heat or direct sunlight.

Based on our internal research, we have determined that exposure to higher temperatures can create a less than perfect cup. Though these cups don’t look or taste the way we would like, please note that they are still safe to consume.

We work hard to ensure that our candy is made and transported in temperature-controlled environments, but once it leaves our facility we cannot always guarantee that it is properly handled. If you come across dry nut butter cups, please let us know where you purchased it, the best by date and lot code and we will work with our retail distribution partners to prevent this from happening in the future. We are also happy to send you a replacement coupon if you can provide your mailing address.

WHY ARE MY NUT BUTTER CUPS DISCOLORED?

If you are experiencing white coating on your nut butter cups, it is actually the result of warmer temperatures causing changes in the cocoa butter and nut butter center. In production, if the chocolate does not completely form together to trap the nut buttery goodness inside the chocolate, it can leave this white residue/coating on the nut butter cups. The product is perfectly safe to consume!

If your nut butter cups appear lighter in color, this is a result of cocoa bloom, which is very common in nut containing chocolate candies made without preservatives. Exposure to cool temperatures following warm temperatures may affect the formulation and, as a result, this may cause the chocolate to appear whitish or even make the dark chocolate look like milk chocolate.

WHY IS THERE A WHITE COATING ON THE SURFACE OF MY NUT BUTTER?

What you are seeing in your Chocolate Hazelnut or Vanilla Almond Butter is called cocoa bloom. This occurs naturally when the cocoa butter separates, solidifies and rises to the surface of the jar. Although this blooming is not a food safety hazard, and it is still consumable, we understand the appearance may be out of the ordinary. If you would like to send us the flavor, best by date and a picture of the cocoa bloom, we’d love to track the batch as well as replace your jar!

WHY IS MY NUT BUTTER JAR/SQUEEZE PACK THICK AND CRUMBLY?

We apologize for the inconvenience and frustration. Our nut butter should always be creamy and delicious! Although we strive to not have oil separation in any of our nut butters, the nut butter should never be so dry that it is difficult to spread or get out of the jar. Dry nut butters can result from overheating during the production process. If you’ve experienced this, we recommend checking each best by date on shelves to ensure it does not match your current jar. It’s likely this is a batch occurrence and this will help you find fresh jars in the future. Also, give the jar a squeeze. It should “give” a little bit, indicating that it’s the perfect consistency. Additionally, we would love to hear from you if you’ve experienced this issue so we can fix this.

WHAT DO I DO IF I PURCHASED A PRODUCT THAT HAS ALREADY EXPIRED?

All of our products have a one-year shelf life from the manufacturing date. We do not recommend consuming the product after its best by date because there may be variances in consistency, taste and overall quality of the product.

While the store is responsible for removing soon-to-be expired (or already expired!) products from the shelves, we truly appreciate your feedback on this issue and would love to send you a coupon for your next purchase! However, if you find expired product on shelf, notify the store’s team members so they can promptly remove the affected products from shelf.
